Planning for the bomb

Architizer  links to a great article on planning American cities in the face of nuclear warfare. A small group of atomic scientists proposed massive relocation and dispersion of the population, dismantling any city with a population greater than 50,000. These newly displaced Americans would be resettled in new towns laid out on a perfect grid across the country.
The plan was appealing, they wrote, because it was much more feasible than building underground cities, and could be completed within a decade. The above image was published in Life magazine in 1947.
